Arkansas Basin

The Arkansas River Basin is the powerhouse of Colorado fly fishing. Originating near Leadville at over 10,000 feet, the river tumbles through high alpine meadows, steep granite canyons, and broad valleys before exiting into the plains near Pueblo. It boasts over 100 miles of Gold Medal Water, making it the longest continuous stretch of Gold Medal fishing in the state.

Key Sections

• Hayden Meadows: Near Leadville, this is a meandering meadow section with endless cutbanks. It holds smaller Trout but offers solitude and spectacular views of Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive.
• The Numbers / Pine Creek: Famous for Class IV-V whitewater, these granite canyons offer fast pocket-water fishing for aggressive Brown Trout. It's high-octane wading and floating.
• Browns Canyon: A National Monument and the heart of the river's float fishing. Miles of inaccessible water mean the best way to fish this legendary stretch is by raft or drift boat.
• Salida to Cotopaxi: The river widens here, creating classic riffle-run-pool structures. This is prime water for the famous "Mother's Day Caddis" hatch.

Hatches & Seasons

The Arkansas is best known for its Brachycentrus (Mother's Day) Caddis hatch, which explodes upstream from Canon City to Salida in late April and May. It is a blanket hatch that brings every fish in the river to the surface.

• Summer: After runoff (usually early July), the "Golden Stonefly" hatch offers big-fly action. By August, it's prime Hopper season along the grassy banks.
• Spring/Fall: Blue Winged Olives (BWOs) are the staple food source during shoulder seasons.
• Winter: The "Banana Belt" near Salida often remains ice-free, allowing for excellent winter midge fishing.
