Gunnison Basin

The Gunnison River Basin is a land of dramatic canyons and heavy trout. From the alpine start of the Taylor River to the prehistoric depths of the Black Canyon, this basin offers diverse and world-class angling opportunities. It is home to some of the strongest fighting fish in Rockies, conditioned by heavy currents and steep gradients.

Key Sections

• The Taylor River (C&R): Below Taylor Park Reservoir lies the "C&R" (Catch and Release) section. It is famous for Mysis shrimp-fed monster Rainbows that can exceed 10 pounds. Sight fishing here is the ultimate challenge.
• The Gunnison River (Almont to Blue Mesa): A beautiful freestone section formed by the confluence of the Taylor and East Rivers. It offers great float fishing and a renowned Kokanee Salmon run in the fall.
• Black Canyon & Gunnison Gorge: Downstream of the dams, the river carves through a sheer granite chasm. The "Gunny Gorge" is a Gold Medal fishery accessible by hike or horse pack-in, offering arguably the best stonefly fishing in Colorado.

Seasons

• Spring: The Taylor River fishes well year-round due to dam flows.
• June: The Salmonfly hatch in the Black Canyon/Gorge is legendary.
• Fall: The Kokanee Salmon run (Sept/Oct) brings massive fish up from Blue Mesa Reservoir, followed by excellent egg-pattern fishing for resident trout.
