North Platte River Basin

The North Platte River Basin is a legendary fly fishing destination that spans two states, from the windswept meadows of North Park, Colorado, to the high plains reservoirs of Wyoming. It is famous for producing massive trout and incredibly high fish counts per mile. This system includes everything from intimate freestone creeks to sprawling, nutrient-rich tailwaters.

Key Sections

• North Park (Colorado): The headwaters meander through the high-altitude valley of North Park. This includes the North Platte, Michigan, and Illinois rivers. It is excellent meadow fishing for Brown Trout.
• Northgate Canyon: As the river crosses into Wyoming, it enters a rugged wilderness canyon known for its stonefly hatches and adventurous floating.
• The Miracle Mile (Wyoming): A famous tailwater section between Seminoe and Pathfinder Reservoirs. It remains ice-free and offers the chance to hook 20+ inch trout year-round.
• Grey Reef (Wyoming): Below Alcova Dam, this tailwater boasts some of the highest trout densities in the world (3,000-5,000 fish per mile). It is a nymphing powerhouse.

Seasons & Strategies

The North Platte is a year-round fishery, but spring (March-May) is famous for the "flush" and the pre-spawn Rainbow run.

• Spring: Massive Rainbows move into the tailwaters to spawn. Redds should be avoided, but the fishing in deep runs is electric with eggs, leeches, and midges.
• Summer: Trico hatches in the mornings and Caddis in the evenings. The "Reef" fishing slows down with weeds, but the "Mile" stays consistent.
• Fall: Brown trout spawn and aggressive streamer fishing dominates the conversation.
