San Juan River Basin

The San Juan River Basin in northwest New Mexico contains one of the most celebrated tailwater fisheries in the world. The Quality Water section below Navajo Dam consistently produces rainbow and brown trout averaging 16–20 inches, with an estimated 15,000+ trout per mile. Cold, consistent dam releases and abundant aquatic insect life create year-round fishing opportunities that draw anglers from across the globe.

Key Fisheries

• San Juan River (Quality Water): A 3.75-mile Green Chile Special Trout Water section from Navajo Dam to the Crusher Hole Day Use Area. Artificial flies/lures only, single barbless hook, 2-fish daily limit.

Iconic Hatches

Midges are the foundation of San Juan fishing, with multiple species hatching daily throughout the year. BWO hatches in spring and fall provide dry fly opportunities. Tricos emerge on summer mornings. The San Juan Worm is productive in all seasons and has become synonymous with this river.
