Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Cone and Thread Base
Slide the cone onto the jig hook and start the thread a quarter shank back from the cone. Wrap back to the bend and forward again.
- 2
Body
Secure the braid and wire at the base of the cone and wrap them back to the bend. Wrap the braid forward to form a slender body and tie it off.
- 3
Wing
Pierce the rabbit strip through the center of the hide with the hook point, slide it to the base of the body, and tie it down at the front edge of the body so it reaches from the bend to the front of the hook.
- 4
Rib
Wind the wire forward Matuka-style through the rabbit strip at even intervals, then tie it off and clip it.
- 5
Legs
Double over two strands of Sili Legs, loop them over the shank at the front edge of the body, and tie them in on top of the rabbit strip so two legs lie along each side.
- 6
Flash
Tie a small clump of copper Flashabou in behind the cone at the center of its length. Spread it evenly 360 degrees around the shank, double the front ends back toward the rear and bind them down.
- 7
Marabou Collar
Measure a marabou feather so the tips reach just past the bend and tie it on top at the back edge of the cone. Repeat on the bottom.
- 8
Finish
Push the cone tight against the marabou butts, taper the thread in front of the cone, whip finish and coat the wraps with UV resin. Trim the legs to mid-tail length.
How to Fish the Meat Whistle
Strip with varying speeds near structure and depth to mimic crayfish, sculpin, or baitfish. Effective in freestone and tailwater rivers with structure and depth. Works best when targeting big trout in conditions matching crayfish or sculpin habitat. Rabbit zonker provides natural movement and lifelike action.
