Description
The Gray Drake (Siphlonurus species) is a large, impressive swimming mayfly often found in slower sections of rivers and sloughs. They are significant insects, usually hook size #10-12, with slate-gray bodies and dark wings. While not as universally famous as the Green Drake, the Gray Drake hatch can produce exceptional fishing, particularly for large trout cruising in slow water or backeddies where these insects congregate. They are strong swimmers and agile fliers.

Gray Drake nymphs frequent slow-moving currents, quiet pools, and the edges of rivers where vegetation is present. They are swimmers, similar to Callibaetis but larger and found in moving water environments (though usually the slowest parts). They often migrate from the main river into sloughs or backwaters to hatch, avoiding the fast current.
Behavior
Gray Drakes hatch sporadically throughout the day but often concentrate in the afternoon. The real show, however, is frequently the spinner fall. Because Siphlonurus live longer as adults than many mayflies (sometimes days), spinner falls can be immense. They mate over the water and fall spent, typically in the evening. Trout line up in the slow, glassy tailouts of pools to sip these large, easy meals.

Tactics
- Slow Water: Don't fish the fast riffles for these; look in the deep, slow pools and back eddies.
- Spinner Fall: This is the main event. Be ready with large spent-wing patterns in the evening.
- Movement: A twitch of the rod tip can mimic the struggling dun or the spinner's last kick.
- Blind Casting: In slow sloughs, a large searching dry fly like a Gray Wulff can pull fish up even when no hatch is visible.

Conservation Status
Gray Drakes depend on the connectivity of river systems with their floodplains, backwaters, and sloughs. Channelization of rivers destroys their preferred slow-water habitat. Wetland preservation and natural river morphology are key to their survival.
