Description
Stoneflies (Order Plecoptera, meaning "braided wing") include some of the largest and most calorie-dense insects in the trout stream. From the massive Salmonfly (size #4) to the diminutive Winter Stone (#20), they are a favorite meal for trout. Unlike mayflies, stoneflies are clumsy fliers and have a primitive life cycle that notably lacks a swimming emerger stage. Adult stoneflies fold their wings flat over their back, giving them a distinct rectangular silhouette. Their presence is a biological certification of water quality: they require pristine, highly oxygenated, cold water to survive.

Habitat
"Stonefly" is an apt name. Nymphs require stable, rocky bottoms in fast-moving currents. They lack the ability to swim well and rely on hooked legs to cling to stones in turbulent riffles. You will rarely find them in silt, slow water, or lakes. They are creatures of the "white water," inhabiting the heads of pools, plunge pools, and heavy pocket water.
Behavior
Stonefly hatches are "mechanical" and predictable but chaotic.
- Bank Migration: Nymphs move to the edges.
- Molting: Occurs on land (look for shucks on rocks/trees).
- Egg Laying: Females flutter over the water, often in the late afternoon or evening.
- The Splat: Big stoneflies make a commotion. Do not be delicate. A loud "splat" of the fly attracts attention.

Major Species & Hatches
- Winter/Spring: Little Black Stoneflies (Capnia), Skwala.
- Late Spring/Early Summer: Salmonflies (The Giant), Golden Stones.
- Summer: Yellow Sallies, Little Green Stones.
- Fall: October Caddis (often confused, but distinct) and late-season small stones.
Tactics
- Pound the Banks: Since they hatch on land, the fish look towards the shore.
- Get Down: Stonefly nymphs are heavy. Use tungsten beads to reach the bottom of fast currents.
- Movement: Skittering or twitching your dry fly can mimic a female trying to fly off the water.
Conservation Status
Stoneflies are highly sensitive to thermal pollution and low oxygen. They are the first to disappear when a river is dammed (altering flows) or experiences agricultural runoff. Protecting adequate flows and riparian buffers is essential for their survival.
