The Wish
I'm Lew. I've spent a lifetime chasing trout across the West — Colorado tailwaters, Wyoming spring creeks, Montana freestones — and somewhere along the way I got tired of the routine before the routine. Three browser tabs for flow data. A weather app. A PDF hatch chart from somewhere. A guide's blog post from 2021. By the time I actually rigged up, I'd done more research than fishing.
I wanted one place. One app I could open in the truck before I left, again at the put-in, and once more when the bite turned and I needed to know what was actually hatching. Something that pulled real-time conditions, told me whether the river was worth the drive, and showed me what flies were working — without me chasing down a fly shop or piecing together five Reddit threads.
So I built it. That's FlyGuysNLies.
What the App Does
Less guessing. More fishing.
Other apps give you maps. We give you intelligence — real-time conditions, honest hatch charts, and rig recommendations tied to what the river is doing today, not generic advice scraped from the internet.
Here's what it does, and why we built it in this order:
River verdicts. Open any river and you'll see live flow, weather, and the 7-day trend, distilled into a straight answer: is it fishing well today — good, fair, or poor — at a glance. No interpretation needed, no deciding whether four hours of driving is worth it on a hunch.
Hatch alerts. River-specific hatch timing based on what's actually happening this week, not a Western-states chart that's been copy-pasted for a decade. And when a hatch starts, you get a push — so you know to be on the water for it.
Fly & rig picks. The app takes today's conditions and the active hatches and hands you the exact fly and rig to tie on — the same call an experienced guide would make standing next to you at the put-in.
Smart alerts. Flow changes, clearing water, the window opening up — you'll know the moment your river turns on, instead of finding out from someone else's grip-and-grin two days too late.
Around those four you also get Browse Rivers to explore new water, Favorite Rivers to keep your regulars a tap away, a Trip Brief to pull it all together before you go, and a place to log your days on the water. Website, App, and Premium
FlyGuysNLies is the website: public river guides, video content, hatch information, and the source of truth for the river content we publish. FlyGuysNLies Mobile is the companion app experience: real-time river verdicts, push alerts, favorite rivers, trip briefs, and app-only planning tools.
The free app experience keeps core river browsing and condition checks available. Premium adds the alerting and advanced workflow features built for anglers who want the app to watch their favorite water for them. We keep the free-versus-Premium boundary visible in the app and on support pages so anglers know what they can use before they pay.
How We Build the Data
Our river pages and app bundle start from the same owned content model: river profiles, hatch charts, fly recommendations, and taxonomy data managed by FlyGuysNLies. Conditions and verdicts combine public hydrology and weather data, river-specific thresholds, seasonal hatch timing, and editorial review from our Western trout focus.
We are not an official agency. Flow gauges, weather stations, closures, fire restrictions, private-property boundaries, and fishing regulations can change quickly, and the controlling source is the relevant agency, land manager, or water operator. FlyGuysNLies is planning intelligence for anglers, not a substitute for checking official rules before you fish.
Why the West
We cover Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and New Mexico — and we go deep instead of wide. National apps stretch thin across fifty states. We'd rather know the South Platte canyon by canyon and the Madison reach by reach than pretend to cover a Tennessee tailwater we've never fished. No bass boats. No bait. Just fly fishing.
That focus is also a conservation choice. The more anglers we put on the water with good data, the fewer fish get fought to exhaustion in 70-degree water because someone drove four hours not knowing the temps. Show up prepared, fish the right window, handle fish well — and we keep these rivers worth fishing.
Why “FlyGuysNLies”
The name's a wink at fishing's oldest tradition: the fish story that grows by an inch with every retelling. We thought it was funny. We kept it.
The “Lies” are in the name. The data is real.
