Northeast New Mexico

Northeast New Mexico is defined by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, home to the upper Pecos River and the Cimarron River below Eagle Nest Lake. The Pecos is New Mexico's most accessible high-country trout stream, with a rich history as one of the original fly fishing destinations in the Southwest. The Cimarron offers excellent tailwater fishing in the Colin Neblett Wildlife Management Area.

Key Fisheries

• Pecos River (Upper): A classic mountain freestone near the village of Pecos, with easy access from Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Holds wild brown and rainbow trout in a beautiful forested canyon.
• Cimarron River: Below Eagle Nest Dam, this small tailwater runs through the Colin Neblett WMA with special regulations and quality trout fishing.

Hatches

The Pecos sees strong caddis and PMD hatches through summer, with stonefly activity in early season. The Cimarron's cold tailwater releases support consistent midge and BWO fishing.
