Southwest New Mexico

Southwest New Mexico is wild, remote, and home to the endangered Gila Trout — found nowhere else on Earth. The Gila Wilderness, America's first designated wilderness area, offers backcountry fly fishing in pristine streams that have changed little in centuries. The main Gila River and its forks provide a true wilderness fishing experience, while the Mimbres River offers a small-stream alternative closer to Silver City.

• Gila River (West Fork): Remote wilderness water accessed by trail, holding Gila Trout in crystal-clear pools. This is bucket-list fishing for native trout enthusiasts.

Native Species

The Gila Trout was once on the brink of extinction but has been recovered to fishable populations in select Gila Wilderness streams. These golden-colored fish are a conservation success story and a unique quarry for fly anglers.
