Fly Fishing Arkansas River - Bighorn Sheep Canyon

Bighorn Sheep Canyon stretches from Wellsville downstream to Parkdale along US-50, cutting through a dramatic canyon of red granite walls where bighorn sheep graze on cliffsides above the river. This Gold Medal section of the Arkansas River runs through some of the most visually striking water in Colorado — tight canyon pools, sweeping riffles, and boulder-studded pocket water holding wild brown and rainbow trout averaging 12-18 inches with fish over 20 inches available.

The Mother’s Day caddis hatch (late April through early June) is the headline event, with blanket hatches of Brachycentrus adults triggering aggressive surface feeding throughout the canyon. As runoff recedes in late June, golden stoneflies appear along rocky banks, followed by PMDs and tricos through the summer. Terrestrial season (July through September) is exceptional here — the canyon’s grassy benches and exposed banks deliver a steady supply of hoppers, ants, and beetles that produce explosive surface takes in the afternoon heat. BWOs bookend the season with productive spring and fall hatches, while midges provide year-round subsurface opportunities.

Float trips from Salida East (Wellsville) to Parkdale cover the full canyon stretch and access water that waders simply cannot reach. Drift boats and rafts work nymph rigs through deep slots and streamer patterns tight to undercut banks. Wade anglers have solid access at Point Barr, Rincon, and Texas Creek, where US-50 pullouts provide entry to productive riffle complexes and deep pools. The canyon narrows significantly below Texas Creek, producing faster water and concentrated fish in holding lies.

Fall brings some of the best fishing of the year as flows stabilize, brown trout stage for spawning, and BWO hatches intensify on overcast afternoons. Winter nymphing remains productive in the lower canyon where moderating elevations keep the river fishable longer than upstream sections. Whether floating the full canyon stretch or wading pocket water at Texas Creek, Bighorn Sheep Canyon delivers challenging fishing in a spectacular setting.
