Fly Fishing Arkansas River - Buena Vista
The Buena Vista section of the Arkansas River runs from Granite downstream through Brown’s Canyon National Monument to Hecla Junction, carving a rugged granite gorge through the heart of Chaffee County. This Gold Medal corridor of freestone water is fed by steady high-elevation snowmelt from the surrounding Sawatch Range, delivering reliable streamflow and world-class trout habitat. Towering granite walls, dense pine forests, and stands of quaking aspen create a dramatic backdrop as the river winds through narrow canyon slots, deep pools, and pocket water that holds brown, rainbow, and cutbow trout averaging 12-18 inches.
The Mother’s Day caddis hatch in late April and May is the marquee event, blanketing riffles with Brachycentrus adults and triggering aggressive surface feeding throughout the canyon. As runoff recedes in early July, golden stoneflies emerge along boulder-strewn banks, followed by prolific PMD and trico hatches through August. Summer terrestrial action — hoppers, ants, and beetles — produces explosive dry fly takes along grassy banks. Fall (September through October) brings stable low flows under golden aspen canopies, with BWOs and midges drawing trout to the surface in slow seams and tailouts.
Brown’s Canyon is primarily float water — much of the best holding water is inaccessible from shore, making drift boats and rafts the most effective way to cover it. The Buena Vista River Park boat ramp is the primary launch, with Hecla Junction serving as the standard take-out for the full Brown’s Canyon float (Class III-IV water during runoff). Wade anglers can access upper reaches near Granite along CR 371, target riffles at Railroad Bridge, and fish pocket water at Ruby Mountain. Below the canyon, the river opens into broader riffles and runs approaching Hecla.
Whether you prefer pounding banks with streamers from a drift boat, tight-line nymphing deep runs at Railroad Bridge, or drifting dry-droppers through summer hatches, this stretch delivers consistent action framed by soaring peaks and remote canyon beauty. The combination of Gold Medal water, national monument scenery, and challenging multi-species fishing makes this one of Colorado’s premier fly fishing destinations.
