Beaverhead River, Clark Canyon Dam downstream to the mouth at Twin Bridges — regulations vary by reach (2026 MT FWP regulations). Rainbow trout are catch-and-release river-wide. Clark Canyon Dam to Pipe Organ Bridge: open the third Saturday in May through Sept. 30. Clark Canyon Dam to High Bridge FAS: brown trout catch-and-release; artificial lures and single-pointed hooks only. High Bridge FAS to Barretts Diversion: brown trout 5 daily and in possession, all under 18 inches. Barretts Diversion to the mouth: open April 1 through Sept. 30, brown trout catch-and-release. Pipe Organ Bridge to Barretts Diversion is open all year. High Bridge FAS to Henneberry FAS is closed to nonresident float fishing and float outfitting on Saturdays from the third Saturday in May through Labor Day. Henneberry FAS to Pipe Organ Bridge is closed to nonresident float fishing and float outfitting on Sundays from the third Sunday in May through Labor Day. Fly Fishing Beaverhead River - Twin Bridges
Overview
The Beaverhead flows from Clark Canyon Dam through the Dillon valley to its mouth near Twin Bridges. Reservoir releases influence the upper river, while the corridor winds through ranchland with riffles, deeper runs and pools. Cottonwoods and willows provide bank cover, and bends and undercut edges create holding water for brown and rainbow trout.
Clear water calls for careful presentation and a low approach. Work the nearest feeding lane first, adjust nymph depth and weight to the current, and look for slower seams beside deeper runs. Accurate fly placement and controlled drifts matter along the winding banks; watch for rising fish before switching to a dry fly.
Seasonal Fishing
Blue-winged olives are useful in spring and fall, PMDs in summer, and caddis during evening activity. Hoppers, ants and beetles become useful along banks from midsummer into early fall. Small mayfly and caddis nymphs cover deeper runs and slower seams when surface feeding is sparse. Match the presentation to the feeding lane rather than repeatedly casting across the strongest current.
