Fly Fishing Colorado River - Parshall

Overview

The Colorado River below the Williams Fork confluence flows west through the open valley toward Kremmling and the Blue River confluence. Cottonwoods and willows line stretches of bank, while gravel bars, riffles and deeper runs create varied holding water for brown and rainbow trout.

Fishing the Valley Runs

Spring runoff can increase current and reduce clarity. Work sheltered edges and softer seams with nymphs, adjusting weight and depth to the water in front of you. Midge and mayfly patterns offer starting points when small insects are active, while caddis imitations can suit evening rises. During summer, look for terrestrial activity along grassy banks and use a dry-dropper rig where fish feed beneath the surface. Cooler fall conditions invite mayfly and midge fishing, with streamers useful for exploring deeper runs. Match observed insects rather than relying on a fixed hatch schedule.

The cobble bottom, depth and current vary between runs. Select footing and a return route before entering, and fish from the bank where conditions make entering unsuitable.

Access

Powers Fishing Access has a designated day-use parking lot beside a public Colorado River fishing segment. From Kremmling, drive east on Highway 40 for about 7.5 miles and take the signed turn on the right into the lot.
