Fly Fishing Eagle River - Edwards to Eagle

Overview

The Eagle River from Edwards to Eagle flows through a broad valley of sagebrush hillsides and cottonwood bottoms. Long riffles feed deep pools, while boulder gardens and gravel bars divide the current into distinct feeding lanes. Brown and rainbow trout hold around these features, with nymphs, dry flies and streamers offering different ways to cover the water.

River Character and Seasonal Fishing

Look for the softer current beside a boulder, the edge of a deeper run or a seam along an undercut bank. Adjust nymph weight and depth to the chosen lie. When surface feeding develops, a dry fly placed in a single feeding lane helps avoid drag across the wider channel.

Seasonal hatches follow the Colorado freestone progression: midges and blue-winged olives in spring, stoneflies and caddis in early summer, pale morning duns and green drakes through summer, then terrestrial fishing with hoppers and ants through late summer and fall. Watch for insects and rising trout before changing patterns.

Access

Horn Ranch Open Space has a public parking lot and fishing access south of I-70. The entrance is on US 6 at Hells Pockets Road, about six miles east of Eagle; use the designated Eagle Valley Trail route to the river. Public access does not extend north of the I-70 bridge or south of US 6.
