Fly Fishing Flathead River - Polson

Overview

The lower Flathead River near Polson flows away from Flathead Lake below Seliš Ksanka Qĺispe Dam, formerly Kerr Dam. This short canyon section lies within the Flathead Indian Reservation, where rocky banks, rapids and deeper pools shape the river corridor. Dam releases influence the current through this water.

Canyon Character

The river here differs from the broad valley mainstem above Flathead Lake. Canyon walls and faster channels limit the places from which the water can be approached, while deeper pools and channel margins create contrasting currents. Rapids and narrow canyon banks interrupt travel through the section.

For fly selection, nymphs can cover a subsurface seam and streamers can search deeper structure. Dry flies and terrestrial patterns are options when fish feed at the surface.
