Fly Fishing Green River - Daniel to La Barge

Overview

The Green River between Daniel and La Barge meanders through western Wyoming’s sagebrush valleys and cottonwood corridors. Long glides, side channels, cutbanks and deeper pools give this broad freestone river a varied character. Brown and rainbow trout inhabit its runs and current seams, with mountain whitefish in deeper riffle water.

Fishing the Bends and Seams

Snowmelt and irrigation demands influence the river’s depth and clarity. Look for the softer current along a cutbank, the edge of a side channel or a seam beside deeper water. Adjust a nymph’s weight and depth to the chosen run rather than treating the entire section as one uniform current.

Stonefly and mayfly nymphs, along with caddis larvae, offer subsurface choices. A streamer can search the structure along a deeper bank, while a dry-dropper can cover a grassy edge where fish feed near the surface. Watch for a specific feeding lane before extending the cast across the broader channel.

Summer caddis, pale morning duns and smaller mayflies provide dry-fly options. Hoppers, beetles and ants add bankside choices later in summer. The cottonwood bottoms and open sagebrush country give the section its wide-open setting, while the river’s bends create smaller pieces of holding water within the larger channel.

Access

Huston Public Access Area has designated parking and a Green River boat launch off East Green River Road, south of Daniel. It is also the trailhead for walk-in fishing along the marked Sommers-Grindstone fishing easement. The Wyoming Game and Fish site describes the approach and easement limits.
