Overview

The Green River passes through the city of Green River, Wyoming, upstream of Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Cottonwood bottoms, gravel riffles and deep bends contrast with the town’s streets and southwestern Wyoming’s buttes and mesas. Brown and rainbow trout, along with mountain whitefish, inhabit the broader runs and current seams.

Fishing the City Water

Look for the slower current along a cutbank or the edge of a deeper bend. A streamer or crayfish pattern can search bankside structure, while a nymph rig can cover a riffle seam. A prince nymph with a smaller midge dropper offers one combination; adjust weight and depth to the chosen run.

Hoppers provide a summer option along grassy or brush-lined edges. Watch for fish feeding near the bank before placing the fly, and keep the drift in that lane. The river’s breadth and varied currents make a specific holding lie more useful to study than a broad stretch of uniform-looking water.

Urban surroundings give this section a different setting from the Green’s remote upper reaches. Cottonwoods and deeper bends still create distinct trout habitat within the town corridor.
