Fly Fishing Ogden River - Lower Ogden River (Below Pineview)

Overview

Below Pineview Reservoir, the Ogden River runs through the steep walls of Ogden Canyon before entering the city of Ogden. The mapped reach includes both the confined canyon and the urban river corridor. Riffles, glides and deeper pools give you different water to read, with undercut banks, overhanging vegetation and seams between fast and slow current offering individual places to concentrate a drift.

Reservoir releases influence the river, but its level and clarity can change. Start with the water you can see and control: a small nymph along a pool seam, a midge presentation in a quieter glide, or a dry fly when rises and visible insects suggest surface feeding. Carry olive patterns for spring and fall, caddis for warmer weather, and terrestrials for grassy banks.

From Canyon to City

The canyon and city portions of the lower Ogden deserve separate attention. Steep walls confine the upper corridor, while the river through Ogden runs beside parks, trails and developed surroundings. A long glide calls for a different presentation from a riffle spilling into a deeper pool. Break the water into those smaller pieces before deciding where to cast.

Willows, cottonwoods and overhanging vegetation add cover along parts of the banks. Look for a deeper edge beside an undercut and the seam where a quicker current meets quieter water. Fish the near lane first so your line does not cross it on the way to a farther lie. In clearer water, keep your shadow off the pool and give the fly a drift with as little drag as you can manage.

Pools, Seams and Nymphs

A small nymph lets you work the deeper pools and current seams beneath the surface. Adjust weight and depth to the lie, then watch whether faster surface water is pulling the rig away from the lane you chose. More line on the water can make that drift harder to control.

Midge patterns are another option for the quieter glides and pools, including during the colder part of the season. Take time to observe before switching flies. A careful drift through a defined lane tells you more than repeatedly covering the whole pool.

Seasonal Surface Flies

Carry Blue-winged Olive patterns for spring and fall surface activity, especially on overcast days. Caddis belong in the warmer-weather box, with Pale Morning Duns as an additional summer option when visible insects and rises call for them. Match the presentation to what is happening in that pool rather than expecting a fixed hatch schedule.

Hoppers and ants offer a summer and early-fall approach beside grassy banks and overhanging vegetation. Place the fly near the cover and follow its path through the softer current. A short, clean drift along the edge can be more useful than a long cast across several seams.

Reading Changing Releases

Water levels affect which seams, riffles and pool edges stand out on a visit. As the level changes, revisit the near water and look for a lane where you can control the fly. Clarity can change too; let your observations determine the next presentation instead of assuming that a reservoir-fed river holds the same conditions throughout the season.
