Fly Fishing Rio Grande River - South Fork to Del Norte
Fly fishing the Rio Grande between South Fork and Del Norte delivers one of the most celebrated float-fishing experiences in Colorado. This wide, meandering freestone river flows through the heart of the San Luis Valley, with dynamic runs, riffles, and deep banks that hold wild brown and rainbow trout. With public boat ramps, dependable flows, and prolific summer hatches, this stretch is a favorite among drift boat guides and seasoned anglers alike.
In late spring (late May through mid-June), the river surges with snowmeltโbut for those watching the Del Norte gage (USGS #08223000), the magic happens as flows drop into the 500โ800 CFS range. Thatโs when the famed salmonfly hatch eruptsโmassive stoneflies crawl from the banks and trigger violent surface strikes. Fishing a size 6 foam salmonfly along willowed banks often produces the biggest fish of the season.
As runoff recedes into July, the river settles into ideal float and wade conditions, and the hatch cycle transitions to golden stoneflies, caddis, PMDs, and green drakes. Dry-dropper rigs with a Chubby Chernobyl trailed by a tungsten beadhead nymph excel in fast runs and drop-offs. In the afternoons, hopper season kicks in, and twitching a foam bug tight to grassy edges brings explosive topwater action.
By August and September, consistent flows and cooler mornings make for productive streamer fishing in early light, while late-season terrestrial and BWO hatches offer technical dry fly opportunities in slower seams and tailouts. This section holds a high fish-per-mile count, with a mix of strong 14โ18" browns and rainbows eager to eat large, visible patterns.
With excellent boat ramps in South Fork, Hanna Lane, and Del Norte, this is a guide-favorite stretch for full-day floats. While float fishing dominates during peak flows, wade anglers can find success along inside corners, islands, and gravel barsโespecially as flows dip below 600 CFS in late summer.
Check the Del Norte flow gage before planning your trip, and consult our hatch chart to match your flies to the season. Whether youโre rowing through a stonefly hatch or targeting risers with a size 18 BWO, the South Fork to Del Norte section of the Rio Grande offers classic Colorado fly fishing at its very best.
