Fly Fishing Sevier River - Upper Hatch

The upper Sevier River near Hatch forms at the confluence of Mammoth Creek and Asay Creek, creating one of Southern Utah's most underrated trout fisheries. This headwater section flows through the Hatch Valley at roughly 6,900 feet, carrying healthy populations of brown, rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout through open meadow water that rewards dry-fly anglers from spring through fall. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources highlights the upper Sevier as one of the state's best winter fisheries, with year-round access possible due to the relatively mild climate of the Hatch Valley.

The upper Sevier near the gage averages 119 cfs annually — larger water than its tributary Mammoth Creek — with flows ranging from 40 cfs in dry years to over 350 cfs in big water years. The optimal wading window of 40-150 cfs provides comfortable fishing conditions through most of the summer and fall. The river's character here is predominantly meadow water: sweeping bends, deep pools, undercut banks, and gravel riffles that hold trout throughout. Brown trout dominate, with fish averaging 10 to 14 inches and larger specimens concentrated in the deeper runs and undercut banks. Rainbow trout supplement the fishery and are found throughout the section, particularly in the riffles and faster runs.

The hatch calendar is rich and varied. Midges carry anglers through winter (zebra midges and black beauties are essential). BWOs peak in April and return in October with strong numbers. PMDs provide reliable summer dry-fly fishing in July and August. Caddis hatches build from May through September with evening activity that can be outstanding. Golden stoneflies and Yellow Sallies emerge in June and July. Terrestrials are arguably the most productive category mid-summer — the open meadows and grasslands bordering the river produce exceptional hopper fishing in August. Streamer fishing targets larger browns during the October-November pre-spawn.

Access is via US-89 through the town of Hatch, with several road crossings and pull-offs providing streamside parking. Some sections cross private land — respect posted boundaries and ask permission. Cedar City Regional Airport (CDC) is about 50 miles away. The upper Sevier sits at the heart of an excellent Southern Utah fishing corridor that includes Mammoth Creek, Asay Creek, Panguitch Creek, and the Sevier below Piute Reservoir — all within easy driving distance for a multi-day trip through Bryce Canyon country.
