Overview

The Snake below Jackson Lake Dam flows through open Teton scenery, with cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish in runs, seams and quieter edges. Reservoir releases shape the river’s depth and current. Clear-water lies can call for a careful approach and a well-controlled presentation.

Tailwater Presentations

Midge, mayfly and caddis imitations provide choices when insects or feeding fish suggest them. Watch a quieter seam before deciding between a small dry and a subsurface fly. A longer leader can help place the fly ahead of the line in a slower pool.

Nymphs offer a way to cover a deeper run, with weight adjusted to the chosen current. Small streamers provide another presentation around submerged structure and bend water. Vary the retrieve and drift angle according to depth, clarity and the fish’s response.

The Teton backdrop gives the river a distinctive setting, but the dam also creates a defined exclusion: the first 150 feet downstream are closed to fishing, swimming, wading and bank use. Keep any approach outside that zone and follow the park’s designated routes.
