Fly Fishing South Fork Flathead River - Hungry Horse

Overview

The South Fork Flathead below Hungry Horse Dam is a short tailwater between the reservoir and the mainstem Flathead. Reservoir releases shape its canyon runs and deep pools. Cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and mountain whitefish give this lower river a different setting from the wilderness water above Hungry Horse Reservoir.

Reading the Tailwater

Steep banks and concentrated current are prominent features below the dam. Releases can change the depth of a run and the softer water available beside it. Look closely at the selected seam, its footing and the current beyond it before choosing a position.

A controlled nymph drift suits the deeper runs. Adjust weight and leader length to keep the flies moving through the intended lane. In clearer water, a longer leader and a careful approach help keep a dry-fly presentation away from the angler’s silhouette.

Flies for Defined Runs

Midge and blue-winged olive imitations offer small-fly choices, with caddis and pale morning dun patterns broadening the box. Watch for insects and rising fish at the water before selecting a dry. A small emerger or nymph can cover the same feeding lane beneath the surface.

This section has its own species and tackle rules. Cutthroat require release, hooks must have single points, and intentional bull-trout angling is not permitted here. The special bull-trout catch-card fishery on the upper South Fork does not extend below Hungry Horse Dam.
