โš ๏ธ REGULATIONS

General Utah statewide regulations apply on the South Fork Ogden River between Causey Dam and Pineview Reservoir: limit 4 trout (combined total) and 10 whitefish, open year-round, no special gear rules. A seasonal spawning closure applies to the Right and Left Forks above Causey Reservoir (Aug. 15 through 6 a.m. on the last Saturday of September), which is outside this section. Fly Fishing South Fork Ogden River - Causey Dam to Pineview Reservoir

Overview

The South Fork Ogden runs below Causey Reservoir through a cottonwood-lined valley toward Huntsville. Short riffles, pocket water and willow-covered banks give this northern Utah tailwater a small-stream character. Brown trout are an important part of the fishery, with deeper pools and root cover shaping many of its fishing lies.

Cottonwood Cover and Short Drifts

The riverโ€™s scale favors careful positioning and controlled casts. Work a seam beside bank cover before reaching across the main current. A deeper pool or undercut bank can require a different leader length and nymph weight from the riffle just upstream.

Reservoir releases and snowmelt change the channelโ€™s depth and clarity. Read the chosen run at the water, including the current beyond the intended fishing position. The cottonwoods also leave woody cover that can complicate a drift or bank approach.

A Caddis-Focused Fly Box

Caddis imitations are useful searching choices here. A yellow cased-caddis nymph with a dark collar in size 14 or 16 is one option beneath an attractor dry or indicator. Stonefly nymphs, Hareโ€™s Ears and Prince Nymphs offer alternatives for defined pockets and runs.

Carry smaller midge and olive patterns for quieter feeding water, and terrestrial dries for grassy or willow-lined margins. Match visible insects and feeding behavior rather than choosing a pattern solely from the calendar. A short drag-free drift can make better use of a narrow feeding lane than a cast covering the whole stream.
