Fly Fishing South Platte River - Dream Stream
Fly fishing South Platte River Dream Stream—officially known as the Charlie Meyers State Wildlife Area—is one of the most revered fly fishing destinations in Colorado, and for good reason. Situated in South Park between Spinney Mountain and Eleven Mile Reservoirs, this short tailwater stretch may only span a few miles, but it punches well above its weight. With consistent, cold flows from Spinney and a nutrient-rich aquatic ecosystem, it supports not only healthy resident trout populations but also epic seasonal migrations of trophy-sized rainbows, browns, and kokanee salmon from the reservoirs.
Fly fishing South Platte River Dream Stream’s wide, meandering channel flows through open meadow terrain with expansive views of the Collegiate Peaks and the Sawatch Range. Its character is subtle—gentle riffles, slick tailouts, and long undercut banks—but don’t be fooled: the fish here are large, smart, and selective. Spring (March–April) is prime time for targeting massive lake-run rainbows preparing to spawn. These fish push into the shallows and hold along the edges of deep channels, creating thrilling sight-fishing opportunities. Fall (late September through November) brings an equally impressive run of browns, followed by kokanee salmon, with aggressive fish smashing streamers and egg patterns in shallow water.
Outside of the migration windows, the Dream Stream is a technical nymphing and dry-fly fishery that demands stealth and precision. Tricos, midges, and blue-winged olives hatch reliably from summer into fall, drawing resident fish into slow slicks and foam lines. Dry-dropper rigs, small emergers, and 6x–7x tippet are often the ticket, especially in low, clear water. Even when there’s no hatch activity, sight-fishing to holding trout with small midge larvae and soft hackles remains effective throughout the year.
Access is straightforward, with several well-marked parking areas along County Road 59 and established angler trails following the riverbanks. Though this is a public stretch, its reputation and proximity to Colorado Springs and Denver mean it can see considerable pressure—especially during peak migration windows. Arriving early, fishing midweek, or hiking farther from main access points can dramatically improve solitude and success.
With its blend of consistent flows, wild trout, migratory giants, and an expansive high-country setting, fly fishing South Platte River Dream Stream offers one of the most iconic and challenging tailwater experiences in the Rocky Mountain West. Whether you're stripping streamers through riffles during a spring rainbow run or casting tiny dries to sipping browns under a September sky, Charlie Meyers SWA remains a must-fish destination for serious anglers chasing memorable fish and wild moments.
