Overview

The upper Logan River is small mountain freestone water framed by brush, aspen and maple. Boulder pockets, deeper plunge pools and short runs create holding water for Bonneville cutthroat and brook trout. Tight bank cover and clear water call for accurate casts and careful observation of each feeding lane.

Pocket-Water Presentations

A short cast or roll cast can place a fly beside a boulder without catching the overhanging brush. Look for a sheltered seam behind the rock and depth at the tail of a small pool. Keep line off conflicting currents where possible, and watch the drift before changing patterns.

Caddis and stonefly patterns offer summer choices for broken water. Hoppers, ants and beetles can cover the overgrown banks as the meadow warms. A nymph provides another approach to deeper pockets, with weight adjusted to the actual current at that lie.

Snowmelt changes the river’s depth and clarity. A familiar pocket can shift between visits, so choose a fishing position and presentation for the water in front of you. The upper Logan’s short runs and dense cover make precise placement part of its mountain-stream character.
