Fly Fishing Provo River - Upper

Overview

The Provo above Jordanelle Reservoir winds through Uinta forest and meadow country before entering a broader valley. Boulder pockets, shaded pools and smoother runs create varied freestone holding water for brown, rainbow and Bonneville cutthroat trout. Willow, aspen and pine cover frame the more intimate mountain reaches.

Mountain and Valley Presentations

In a short pocket, place the fly beside a boulder and keep line off adjoining currents where possible. Longer glides invite a careful approach to a rising fish. Look for shade beneath an overhung bank or a feeding lane beside deeper water before making the first cast.

Caddis and stonefly patterns provide warm-season choices for broken water. Blue-winged olives add spring and fall mayfly options. Hoppers, ants and beetles can cover grassy edges during warmer weather, while a nymph offers another approach to a deeper pool.

Snowmelt changes depth and clarity along this freestone corridor. Adjust the cast, drift length and nymph weight to the chosen lie. The river’s mix of mountain pockets and valley runs rewards a presentation suited to each part of the channel.
