Fly Fishing Red River - Upper Red River

Fly fishing upper Red River follows NM-578 and NM-38 between the town of Red River and Questa, descending through a narrow forested valley of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains where spruce, fir, and aspen line the banks and the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway provides easy roadside access. Fed by snowmelt from Wheeler Peak and surrounding high-country drainages, the river runs cold and clear through much of the year at flows typically ranging from 30 to 150 CFS. The compact stream width and boulder-strewn channel make this a wade-only fishery perfectly suited to small-water tactics and precise presentations.

The Upper Red River supports four trout species: brown trout, rainbow trout, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and brook trout. Browns dominate deeper pools and undercut banks, particularly in the lower reaches closer to Questa. Rainbows and cutthroat occupy riffles and pocket water throughout the corridor, while brook trout are most common in smaller tributaries and upper headwater stretches near the town of Red River. Rio Grande cutthroat, a species of special concern, add a unique native element and reward anglers willing to explore less-pressured water. Typical fish range from 8 to 13 inches, with occasional browns and rainbows reaching 14 to 16 inches in deeper pools.

Dry fly fishing is the hallmark of the Upper Red River experience. Caddis hatches begin by mid-May and continue through September, with Elk Hair Caddis and X-Caddis in sizes 14-18 drawing consistent rises. Pale morning duns appear in June and July, and small BWOs provide reliable hatches during overcast spring and autumn days. Golden stoneflies hatch in June along faster boulder runs. Attractor patterns — Stimulators, Royal Wulffs, Parachute Adams in sizes 12-16 — are productive searching patterns throughout the season. Terrestrial fishing with hoppers, beetles, and ants becomes excellent from July through September as grassland meadows border certain stretches. Subsurface, beadhead Pheasant Tails, Hare's Ears, and Prince Nymphs in sizes 14-18 produce in deeper runs. Euro-nymphing techniques shine given the compact width and pocket-water character. Fall brings streamer fishing for larger browns moving upstream to spawn, with Woolly Buggers and small Zonkers in sizes 6-10 swung through deeper runs.

NM-578 and NM-38 parallel the river for the full stretch with multiple pulloffs and Forest Service access points.
