Introduction to Utah Fly Fishing

Utah offers some of the most diverse fly fishing in the West, from the renowned tailwaters of the Green River below Flaming Gorge to the intimate high-country streams of the Uinta Mountains. Whether you're chasing trophy browns or native cutthroats, the Beehive State delivers exceptional angling opportunities.

Why Fly Fish in Utah?

  • Diverse Ecosystems: Experience everything from high-altitude alpine lakes in the Uintas to red-rock desert tailwaters.
  • The Green River: One of the most famous tailwaters in the world, known for its emerald water and massive trout populations.
  • Technical Spring Creeks: Test your skills on the Provo and Weber Rivers, offering year-round dry fly and nymphing opportunities.
  • Unique Native Trout: Utah is home to the Bonneville Cutthroat, which can be found in many of the state's smaller, high-country streams.

Prime Fly Fishing Regions

  • Northern Utah: Home to the Provo and Weber Rivers, this region offers exceptional fishing just minutes from Salt Lake City and Park City.
  • Northeast Utah (Flaming Gorge): The crown jewel, featuring the Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam and the secluded streams of the High Uintas.
  • Central Utah: Characterized by high plateaus and remote streams like the Fremont and Sevenmile, offering solitude and wild trout.
  • Southern Utah: Features unique desert fisheries like the Boulder Mountains and the lower Sevier River drainage.

Best Time to Fly Fish: Seasonal Guide

  • Spring (March - May): A great time for the lower elevation rivers. The Green River sees excellent midge and BWO hatches, while the Provo's famous "Mother's Day Caddis" provides early dry fly action.
  • Summer (July - August): High country season. The Uinta Mountains provide a sanctuary from the summer heat with hundreds of lakes and streams teeming with brookies and cutthroat. Terrestrial fishing peak on the lower rivers.
  • Fall (September - November): Brown trout go on the move. Streamer fishing becomes very productive, and the "Baetis" (BWO) hatches return for some of the best dry fly fishing of the year.
  • Winter (December - February): Dedicated anglers head to the tailwaters. The Green and Provo remain productive throughout the winter, with technical midge fishing being the primary game.
